Parabola
's Fall 1985 issue: "
The Body."
Everything we know, we know through and in the body. But what is thebody? "Is the soul one thing and the body another?" the Buddha wasasked. "That," he said, "is a matter on which I have no opinion."Definitions are traps, and yet we define our body at every moment.Sometimes we look at it as a possession, and dress and feed it toreflect yet another definition. At other times this "possession" turnson us and becomes a bully and a tyrant, with demands opposed to what wethink and feel. It can be called a child, a victim, or a seer, but thetendency is to see it in isolation from the destiny of the whole being. It is here that the insights of the traditions come to our aid. --fromthe editorial Focus
