Parabola's Winter 1987 issue:
The Sense of Humor
It was Helen M. Luke, author of our lead article, who urged
Parabola
to do this issue on "The Sense of Humor." During a conversation with us, she remarked, "There is no true growth without it." It was this observation that gave rise to the many questions that animate this theme. What is the sense of humor, and why does it appear to accompany the development of understanding? What are the qualities we instinctively recognize and appreciate in it? Is it a requirement or a result--or both? And in what way does the sense of humor itself develop and become more penetrating? "The man of understanding finds everything laughable," Goethe wrote, "the man of reason, almost nothing." --from the editorial Focus
